STATE OF CONNECTICUT MILITARY DEPT:      THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE

Hartford, Nov, 16, 1908:

  This is to certify that Elijah Jones served in the war of the Revolution and the following is said service according to the records of this office.

  Pm [age 103. Connecticut men in the Rev. appears the following.  Elijah Jones, private, from roll of Capt. Johnathan Brewster's Co. Hunington Continental Army for the year 1776.  The 17th Continental Regt. reorganized for service in the continental army for the year 1776.   After the seige of Boston it marched under Washing, to New Youk(by way of New London and the sound in Schooners and remained in that vicinity from April until the close of the year.  "Oordered Aug. 24th to the Brooklin front, engaged in the battle of Long Island Aug. 27,  in the end near Greenwood Cemetary.  Was surrounded by the enemy & lost heavily in prisoners.  Moved with the main army till after the Battle of White Plains.  On page 218 Revolution Rolls & lists appears as follows:                                                 Elijah JOnes private entered service Feb. 20, 1782.  Discharged Aug. 1, 1783, in Capt. Ozias Marvin's Co. of Coast Guards, ordered to be raised by the town of Norwalk for the defense of said town 18, Feb. 1782.                                                    In the History of Chemung Co. State of New York, pp. 279, published in 1879 by Everts & Ensign and printed from the press of J. B. Lipppincott & Co. Pa. appears the following:                                                                      Elijah Jones lived & married in Norwalk, Conn.  to Hannah Raymond, of a distinguished family.  Was a messenger of dispatch in the Rev. War for General Washington & served until its' close at about which time he settled in New Jersey until 1798, when he settled in Newton, now Elmira, New York.         Conn. Men in the Rev.  pp. 103-218:                            "History of Chemung Co.  (St. of NY pp. 279, State of Conn.  Military Dept:       Office of Adjutant Gen.  The D.A.R.  of Elmira NY, erected a bronze monument in the 2nd Street Cemetary in his honor (Elijah Jones)   verified by no. 245310.   

    Elijah Jones SR. was message bearer for George Washington.

    Elijah Jones JR. was grandfather of Harriet Blackford.
