Philo Jones was born June 25, 1791.   On page 97 of  A Towner's History of the Valley and County of Chemung, (1892)  we find:   "Philo Jones was born in Norwalk, Conn.  in 1791 and came with his father and family ten years later to Morristown, N.J.  Some of his education he received there, butwhen he was fifteen he came to Newtown to continue his studies under his elder brother, Simeon.   In 1812 Philo Jones married a daughter of Gen. Matthew Carpenter, and they lived in the house at Water and Columbia Streets in Elmira that remained standing until within a few years, until 1817.  In that year he sold out in the village and bought land in the town of Southport about six miles up Seeley Creek.  It was almost a broken wilderness then.  But he set to work to hew a fortune ort of the hemlock forest, and succeeded, his farm becoming one of the most productive and valuable in the valley.   On this spot he lived more than half a century, dying in 1872 at the age of eighty years.  He repeatedly served as supervisor of his town and in 1850 represented his county in the Assembly.  His children, Finley,  Philo Jr.,   Laura,    Julia and Vrs. Helms, live now (1892) in the neighborhood where their father settled on Seeley Creek, having a village almost to themselves, with a store, saw-mill, blacksmith shop, and post office, the latter made possible and convenient by the Tioga Branch of the Erie Railroad."
